Helping two ’90s icons bring their fandoms together
Two iconic names from the 1990s came together for a limited-edition collaboration that brought gaming nostalgia into sneaker culture.
The collection sold out, but commercial demand was only part of the story.
We wanted to understand how different fan communities had responded, what made the collaboration resonate and which lessons could inform future partnerships.
We conducted cultural research and fandom analysis across gaming, sneaker and collector communities.
The research explored audience overlap, nostalgia, product authenticity, collectability, scarcity and the very different expectations fans brought to the collaboration.
It also identified community frustrations around availability and resale, highlighting the importance of balancing exclusivity with fan experience.
The sell-out demonstrated strong market demand for the collaboration. Our subsequent research helped explain the response, uncovering the emotional and cultural factors driving interest alongside the points of friction.
The findings identified opportunities for future brand and product collaborations, more considered release strategies and stronger engagement with both fan communities.
